My favourite song off of what is arguably Kendrick Lamar’s Magnum Opus, “To Pimp a Butterfly”, just got a video.
AND. IT. IS. SICK.
Guys, I’m going to risk being premature and declare this the BEST video of the year.
Yes, it’s July, but I really don’t see how we are going to get a more stunning, gritty, layered, and TIMELY music video than this. I don’t.
Colin Tilley has done real good. He completely internalized the song. He understood it inside out because he has captured exactly what the song is: Black Triumph and Rage in spite of all the shit that blackness has suffered in this Imperialist, White supremacist, Capitalist Patriarchy that we live in.
Let’s not even talk about the police men carrying K.Dot and crew like pall bearers. I can’t, I really can’t. The poetry is too much and too infuriating.
From the little, angry boy in the car with K dot throwing money out the window, to the beautiful chubby dude doing the nae nae infront of the tower of stereos (yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas), to K. Dot’s knowing smile after being shot down….I mean, I am overwhelmed by just how brutal, beautiful and black this video is. (It’s also in black and white, in case you missed that subtlety)
Kudos to Colin Tilley, to TDE and to Kendrick for delivering again and again and again.
I’m probably going to overplay the hell out of this one. Are you? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
